Craft and Responsibility

by William T. Delamar

Writing has many rewards, but make no mistake, it's hard work. We have to master the craft. Some may have more "natural talent" than others, but we all have to study the most effective way to convey thought through the written word.

It is not a romantic profession. It's tough. It's demanding.

In addition, we have responsibilities to ourselves, our work, and our readers. We have the responsibility to be true to ourselves, our ideals, our beliefs and goals. We have reponsibility to make our work as effective and as professional as our abilities allow. We have reponsibility to use our abilities for good purposes, not bad, so that our readers benefit from our work.

Many have gone before us to pave the way for our profession, hundreds, maybe thousands. Think back to Guttenburg. Think of Webster. Think of Strunk and White. Naming these few takes giant leaps over the stepping stones to where we are.

It's a great profession. Use it well. It's hard work, but it's satisfying. It can be fun, if we know what we're doing, but frustrating if we don't.
