Visual Arts: Photograms

Photograms are created in the darkroom (no camera). Objects are laid out on photographic paper.  The density or opacity of the objects, as well as their shapes, and their arrangement on the photographic paper all bear upon the outcome. They are exposed to several steps of degrees of light, and then the paper is developed in the usual manner.

In the first half of the twentieth century, Man Ray was responsible for making the photogram an art form.  Laszlo Moholy-Nagy also did some innovative work in the form. This is one of the first techniques I learned in the courses I took in darkroom photography. The possibilities entranced me and I began to view this art form in a new way. I've taught several workshops in the manipulation and technique of this area of photography, and sold my photograms in galleries.
